Maxwell Straz
Max was kind of done with like, work. He had gone to training sessions, almost died like, ten times, and was now a pile of bones on his bed. His faced was beaded with sweat, and his muscles were like noodles, limp and useless. One would think of taking a shower, or sleeping, but he couldn't even bring himself to that. Getting up, or even changing positions seemed unnecessary. Maybe this is why he was in the Fifth, because he was lazy, but energetic at the same time. Okay, maybe not this time, but normally.

As he lay there, the boy looked up at the ceiling, crinkling his nose at the condition of the Fifth's barracks. They seemed to get everything at it's worst, from training sessions to sleeping places. He looked at his weapon to the side of his bed, leaning against a nightstand. Yeah, it could stay there, for all he cared. Max exhaled, groaning as he sat upright in his bed. Maybe movement would be necessary.

Swinging his sock-clad feet over the bed, he sighed, deciding to step to his feet. His feet then carried him to his dresser, so he could at least change out of his training clothing. Once clean fabric was against his skin, Max headed out of the boy's barracks, into a central location, which was gender neutral. He grabbed his notebook, scratched up in various pen colors from all of his drawings, and plopped himself on the couch. When in doubt, just draw random stuff, right? As he sat, taking up the whole expanse of couch, he began making a model for a new dagger.

Hearing something move, he looked up with a smile, as if he wasn't exhausted just a second ago. "Beware, the guys dorms stink, blame the trainers," Max muttered, his lips twisting into a short of frown. Maybe the person didn't need to know, but they would anyways.

Rachel hadn't had the best of days. She had just arrived at camp two days ago, and had only just now been told by a senior camper that she was assigned to the 5th cohort. She had a medium sized bag hanging off of her, filled with her current possessions, including, but not limited to, two spare sets of clothes, some general toiletries, her favorite book and a granola bar for snacking. She had been sleeping in a spare bedroom in New Rome until now, and it was on the way over that her bad day began.

First, she had run into the strange boy who attacked her when she first arrived to 'train' her, and had promptly hid for what seemed like an eternity. When she finally came out of hiding, she fell down a flight of stairs, cracking her hand mirror in the process. She still had the broken mirror in her bag, hoping to get it fixed eventually. Then, to top it all off, a random dark cloud passed overhead, pouring rain over her heard for about five minutes before disappearing as quickly as it came, leaving her cold and wet. Now, she was supposed to make a first impression with the people she would be spending the rest of her life with. She had bad luck in the form of a mirror, she was late and she was soaking wet. The only thing that could make this worse is if she happened to run into someone she knew.

At the sound of Max's voice, Rachel stopped dead in her tracks, her bag falling to the floor. There were a total of two people she knew in camp. The boy who attacked her and the boy who welcomed her. At this point, in the state she was in, she could practically cry. It would be her luck to run into the only person she actually cared what they thought of her. "I-I-I'm here to m-move in." She stuttered, trying her hardest not to make an even bigger fool of herself. Hell, at this point she hasn't even had time to mourn her mother. All things considered, probably the worst day of her life so far.

Max heard something drop to the ground, and turned his head to see what had moved. The boy was still being lazy, and decided that he wouldn't actually move, instead he'd just look upside down, using the couch's cushion as a way to keep from falling. The sight of a wet, slightly shivering girl would seem like an opportunity to most guys, but not Max. He recognized this girl as Rachel, someone who he had helped the day that she came to camp. The demigod shifted upright, tossing his notebook into the other chair, to give the girl his full attention.

"Oh, cool," he said casually, nodding in her direction. He wasn't sure what he was supposed to do in this kind of situation. Max wasn't the best at welcoming people in camp, especially the Fifth. No one wanted to be in it, but once you were, there was no way out. He cast his gaze down towards her bag, wondering if she needed help. "Do you need help with your stuff?" he asked, standing and willing to help.

Rachel had to catch herself, metaphorically speaking. She could see the look of recognition in his face, but he had yet to make a comment about, well, anything really. She felt like hell, and probably looked like it to, yet he just offered to help out. She let a small smile flutter across her face, before answering  "I-I think I've got my stuff, but I'm not really sure where to go exactly."

Rachel remembered overhearing some people talk about the 5th cohort being the worst. It supposedly had bad luck, and was the place where the worst of the worst, in a bad at fighting, not badass way. Now that she was here, however, she had to wonder why. The nicest person she had met at camp so far was in this cohort, while the only one to attack her was not. How was it that the cohort had such a bad reputation? Maybe she'd ask later. All she really wanted to do now was find a place to sleep and do just that. As she thought about sleep,  she couldn't help but think of her mother, now eternally resting. She decided she definitely wanted to sleep now so that she could go stargazing later during the night. It always made her feel close to her mother, and hopefully that would continue now.

Max noted that she looked a little... under the weather. He didn't mean that as a joke either, she looked like she had just done through a tornado and somehow survived. The smile could've convinced him otherwise, but he was still hesitant to say anything to her, which was strange. Normally Maxwell was an uncensored filter, who sputtered out words left and right. But Rachel seemed hurt, just not visibly, and he wasn't sure how to fix that kind of wound.

He just nodded though, looking up towards the girl's dorms. "The girl's rooms are over there, but I don't know where you'd be sleeping," Max admitted with a small shrug. He was tempted to make a joke, about how he hadn't ever needed to look into the female rooms, but he decided against it. "And Lindsay's probably asleep, she's the like - girl leader person," he added slowly, still awkwardly standing.

Rachel gratefully smiled before walking in the direction of the room he had pointed out. When she was halfway to her destination she stopped in her tracks. Carefully placing her things on the floor, she walked back to where Max was.

"Did I ever thank you?" She asked him. She honestly couldn't remember. All she could recall was Max and the other boy saving her from the monsters chasing her. Since then, everything seemed to be a blur. She had just discovered her powers, and she was thanking god, or gods as it would appear, that she hasn't run into the other boy yet. Max was the first kind person she had met since her mother died. She took a few steps towards him so that it was easier for them to talk. "If I didn't... Well, thank you. What you did for me means more to me than you could possibly imagine."

Max watched her walk into the section of the girl's dorms, to set her things down and come back. Honestly, he was surprised she came back. Most people enjoyed his presence the first time, and then left to do more interesting and entertaining things. Her question caught him off guard, as he raised an eyebrow at her.

None the less, her gave her a goofy grin. "No problem," he replied. Max didn't know what happened to her that day she showed up, at least after he left. "That guy that helped you, the day you came, he helped you - right?" the demigod asked, plopping down on the couch once more. His feet were kicked up onto the coffee table as he crossed his arms and looked up at her.

When Max gave her that goofy grin, Rachel couldn't help but smile. Then the other boy was brought up. Rachel's smile fell and she rubbed her forehead. Even talking about the boy gave her a headache. "After you left, he brought me into camp. Once I said that I didn't know the first thing about using any kind of weapon, he decided to give me some training by attacking me." She sighed with a hint of irritation. What kind of person does that to someone? She was scared and tired and hungry and all she wanted was to be safe, and then this guy decided to attack her out of nowhere! "I guess the upside is that it helped me figure out my powers." She said with a small grin of satisfaction. "Why did you leave anyway?" She asked.

Max noticed her smile as he did, which only made his grin grow larger at the thought of causing a small ray of happiness. Really, he was just comic relief most of the time, and it worked for him. Maybe he couldn't preform greatly on the battle field, but he could help reduce some stress. However, he noted that her smile left as quickly as it came, after the mention of the other guy.

"He attacked you?" Max repeated, raising both of his eyebrows in confusion. He had heard of some higher ranked soldiers giving newbies a hard time, but never attacking them. The demigod could only look at her and nod, powers were good. He assumed, he didn't really know. Being able to make weapons was great, but Max wasn't exactly the strongest when it came to that. Rachel's question made his mouth dry, as he cleared his throat. "Well, I guess it looked like you didn't need me there,"' he responded quickly.

"Yeah, he did. Out of nowhere he just drew his sword and brought it down upon me." She sighed, glad that she hadn't seen the boy since. When he said that she didn't need him there, she couldn't help but look at him, her eyes conveying care and even concern. "You have no idea how much I would've liked you to be there." She said, blushing when she realized how that sounded.

Her face still beet red, she sat down next to Max on the couch. Rachel tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and looked over to Max. For a while, she didn't say anything. Then she spoke up "Are you ok?"

Max left his eyebrows raised at her, shocked that she had to go through something like that. She could've been hurt, or worse. He was sure that the older guy probably didn't mean that, but it could have happened none the less. "Oh, wow, that's harsh," he muttered. Honestly, Rome wasn't that forgiving of a place, and it pushed teenagers, but it never put people in immediate danger. "You would've?" he repeated, eyes wide as he looked at Rachel. Guessing by the red on her face, she didn't mean that like it sounded. "Oh, compared to him, yeah, okay," Max muttered, his face turning crimson as he spoke.

Feeling the old couch shift under new weight, the demigod looked over at Rachel. He glanced at his feet, shoes kicked up on the coffee table, while Rachel was sitting stiffly across from him. The silence between then was awkward and uncomfortable, but he tried not to think about it. "Me? I'm fine," Max replued with a slow nod. "You?"

"Yeah, no kidding." Rachel responded. The journey to camp had been hard enough, and the last thing she needed was someone randomly attacking her. At his question, she blushed even harder. "Well, yeah, compared to him I guess. But... I also kinda would've liked you to be there." As she spoke, Rachel contracted, pulling her legs up and leaning her chin on her raised knees.

When he said he was fine, she let out a audible sigh, a small smile on her lips. "From my experience, saying that you're fine means you're really not." It was a true statement. Any time she was feeling really crappy, she would tell anyone who asked that she was, well, fine. It was a method that proved which people cared about her enough to know how she was feeling despite what she said. "As for me... well, I'm fine." Considering what she defined as 'fine', it was certainly a true statement. The death of a parents rarely leaves you as anything else but 'fine'.
