| I need to laugh, and when the sun is out I've got something I can laugh about I feel good, in a special way I'm in love and it's a sunny day • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Once upon a time, there was a girl. Her name was Ellison. Her story was no different than any other teenage girl's. The outcast in school. An older sister that hated her. A Roman goddess as a parent. The usual. Her trouble's were no different than anyone else's either. Boys, training, wondering if you'll make it through the War Games alive. It was all a routine to her. It had all become ordinary in her eyes. But this day was anything but ordinary. Ellison sat in her favorite spot in all of Camp Jupiter. She swung from a wooden swing that she had attached to a tall oak tree that sat in the Berkeley Hills. Ellison could often be found there, since it was similar to her favorite spot back at home. As usual, Ellison had a resent sketch sitting in the grass beside her. She examined the work briefly before she returned her glowing, gold and indigo gaze to her book. Ellison did have dyslexia, but she had learned to overcome it and read anyway. She had to focus a bit more, but she was able to make her way through most books. This was a normal pose for Ellison. A book in her lap and drawing or painting materials beside her. Since Ellison wasn't much of a social butterfly, these things kept her occupied in between the training, sleeping and eating. Ellison's appearance was as it usually was. 5'4" and 120 lbs. Long, curly brown hair that passed her shoulder blades. Freckled cheeks. And glowing, sunrise colored eyes framed by dark brown lashes. In all cases, this day was a normal day. Except for one thing. What Ellison didn't know was that there was someone in Camp that she had been searching for. Someone she had been unable to find, up until this day. So there the Daughter of Aurora sat, swinging back and forth on the wooden plank, and remaining unaware of the surprise in store for her today. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • We take a walk, the sun is shining down Burns my feet, as they touch the ground Good day sunshine Good day sunshine Good day sunshine

| Cody Washington: Once upon a time there was a boy named Cody Washington. Cody was 17 years old, the son of Vulcan, and skilled reader. Unlike most boys his age, he didn't play sports. Instead, Cody read books, occasionally cooking something to eat. Most importantly, though, Cody daydreamed.
'She'll be here, today. She'll meet me at my swing, like we used to do,' Cody told himself as he trudged up to a new spot on the hill. The same procedure was repeated everyday, and it never seemed to change. Cody would walk to a selected spot on Berkley Hill, thinking thoughts of Ellison's silent return as he went, and only disappointing himself when he reached the summit.
Today, though, unlike most days, seemed to be a nice one. No scheduled war games had been prepared, giving the campers a single holiday. One day off to spend with your friends, or maybe the one you love. Since Cody didn't have any friends at camp, it was straight to the hill for another day of dreaming. Maybe, since it was a camp holiday, the gods would be kind enough to let Cody finally know where Ellison was, even if he was never granted permission to see her. He just wanted serenity in knowing she was okay.
A familiar girl sitting on a rope swing stopped Cody in his tracks. His entire being shook. Trying to muster the courage to speak something to the girl, he cringed back, deciding he couldn't handle seeing her again. His Ellison. She was more than okay, for she looked amazing, but seeing her again caused an ache in Cody's heart to throb madly. Seeing the very girl he was seeing now had been his soul's desire for so long, and now that it was fulfilled, a coping pain left him. In it's place, there was only the pain of loss.
"Ellis--on!" Cody managed to cough out, reaching out his hand. He no longer back away; instead he sprinted towards his best friend. His only friend. The girl he remembered loving. "Ellison!" When he reached Ellison, the awkwardness of being away from her for years left him. The Roman harshness left him. The training lessons left him. Wrapping Ellison in a tight hug as he cradled her in his arms, Cody left out choked tears, whimpering with a mixture of joy, relief, and despair. He didn't want to let Ellison leave his life again. _________________ l Ryann Bailey Thompson l l Cody Michael Washington l Daughter l of l Mercury Son l of l Vulcan l First Cohort l l Fourth Cohort l 14 17 |

Her first instinct was to create a weapon from light or blind her attacker, but a familiar voice held her back. This voice struck a cord in her memory. That voice tugged her eyes upward to see a face she instantly recognized. He looked exactly the same, except he wasn't as awkward and gangly as he used to be. Messy blonde hair, same warm eyes and friendly smile. His voice even sounded the same, though it had gotten deeper since she'd last seen him in middle school. "Cody!" Ellison exclaimed. Her arms wrapped around his neck in a tight embrace. After such a long time searching for him, she was finally reunited with her best friend. He was also her first love, though that part she always kept to herself. She leaned up, kissing his cheek in a rush of sudden happiness. She planted a few more light kisses on his cheek before she buried her face in the fabric of his shirt. "I missed you, Cody," she murmured. This all seemed like a dream to her, as if as soon as she let go, he'd disappear. He'd vanish out of her life again and she'd be left alone. So she didn't let go, and she wouldn't let go. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • We take a walk, the sun is shining down Burns my feet, as they touch the ground Good day sunshine Good day sunshine Good day sunshine |

| Cody Washington: Still trying to recollect himself, Cody buried his face in Ellison's hair and mumbled something that was supposed to come out as: "I missed you more," but it was inaudible. His mouth was shoved up against Ellison's hair, since it was a part of his face. The tears had stopped threatening to pour out of his eyes, and instead simply remained pooled, built up behind his eyelids.
After a couple more second, Cody began to loosen his grip on Ellison after a thought started working it's way into his mind. Once he'd completely let go of his friend, and pried her off of him, Cody frowned. "I haven't seen you in a while, kiddo," Cody stated, rubbing the back of his neck with one hand and holding onto Ellison's right shoulder with his left hand. His eyes were still closed so that the dream wouldn't fade away; so that if he opened his eyes and saw there was no Ellison, the voices wouldn't fade away. Cody couldn't let Ellison leave.
"So long that . . . I almost lost hope. I did loose hope. And . . . then I came here. This prison of a camp. It's home now, I guess, but I have to know." Still using all of his power to keep his eyes closed, the strangled look of pain on Cody's face disappeared. "Don't laugh, but . . . You're real, right?" _________________ l Ryann Bailey Thompson l l Cody Michael Washington l Daughter l of l Mercury Son l of l Vulcan l First Cohort l l Fourth Cohort l 14 17 |

She gently caressed his cheek with her thumb. "I'm real," she replied with a light laugh. Ellison let her hand drop to her side as she smiled up at Cody. "I knew you were still out there! I looked for your name in a phone book, but I couldn't ever find it. I can't believe you're here!" she squeaked, jumping up and hugging him again. She released her grip this time, stepping back. "Look at you all tall and muscular! That gangly little kid seems to be gone, huh?" she pointed out with a grin. "So who's your godly parent?" she asked, absentmindedly picking at her nails. She silently hoped it wasn't Aurora, otherwise they'd be related and then where would her love for him go? Ellison shook her head, pushing the thoughts of emotions aside before she turned her attention back to Cody. He really had changed drastically in appearance. Still the same eyes though. A thought struck Ellison's mind and she grinned before she gestured to the now empty swing. "How about it? We can take turns pushing like we used to when we were little," she suggested, rocking back and forth on her heels. This was really how she had always imagined meeting Cody again. Well, less romantic, but the feelings were the same. They'd pick up right where they left off. As though the separation didn't exist at all and was merely a distant dream. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • We take a walk, the sun is shining down Burns my feet, as they touch the ground Good day sunshine Good day sunshine Good day sunshine |

| Cody Washington: Cody sighed in relief, opening his eyes as he did so. Ellison's beauty and charm light up his vision, and he clutched her shoulders gently. She really was real. It hadn't been his tired and desperate eyes playing a trick on him. Somehow, they had been reunited again.
Ruffling her hair, Cody nodded in approval. "Thanks! You look pretty different yourself. You sure grew a lot, but your eyes haven't changed, same hair, same skin tone. Other than that? You're a new Ellison!" The son of Vulcan's voice rose as he spoke, filling itself up with glee.
"I'm a Vulcan," Cody finally declared after going silent. "I guess it's something to be proud of, but, I always saw myself as someone different." Staring at Ellison, but seemingly looking past her, Cody moved his hands to her cheeks. "I'm sure you're the daughter of Venus, or something like that." Releasing her face, Cody winked quickly, replacing his serious expression with a large, lopsided grin.
"I call pushing first!" The boy shouted, making a mad dash for the makeshift swing. His agility has improved since his arrival at camp, and he moved faster with swifter steps. Before he came to camp, Cody was always so off balance, and so limp, when he ran. Even when he walked he looked strange with his awkward foot-placement, but Camp Jupiter really had changed him. In some ways, the demigod appreciated being able to adjust with ease, but he did occasionally miss being unfit for anything athletic like he used to be. It gave him something to feel unique about. "Well, hurry up, slowpoke!" Cody shouted over his shoulder as he skidded to a stop near the swing. _________________ l Ryann Bailey Thompson l l Cody Michael Washington l Daughter l of l Mercury Son l of l Vulcan l First Cohort l l Fourth Cohort l 14 17 |

"Nope, Aurora, goddess of the dawn. Pretty simple, I just like sunlight. Nothing really special. And you do look like a Vulcan, all strong and muscular," she said, poking his arm with a teasing grin. When he raced over to the swing set she smiled. She stood there for a moment, watching him. Her brow furrowed and she followed him. Instead of sitting on the swing, she propped her hands up on it and stared up into Cody's eyes. "Just do me a favor? Don't...don't freak out, okay? This is just something that I've wanted to do since seventh grade. Don't react, don't do anything like that. I just want to know if it'll be like I pictured, okay?" Ellison finished speaking and, without waiting for a response, rose to the tips of her toes. She gently pressed her lips to his. She allowed to linger there a moment, making sure she didn't get swept up in the moment. 'Don't do it, it'll make things weirder. If it's an innocent kiss, he won't think anything of it,' she told herself. She pulled away, wondering if she let the kiss linger for too long. Her cheeks flushed a deep shade of pink and, without another word, she plopped onto the swing. "I just...wanted to know what it would be like, that's all.." she murmured, waiting for him to push her on the swing. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • We take a walk, the sun is shining down Burns my feet, as they touch the ground Good day sunshine Good day sunshine Good day sunshine |

| Cody Washington: "Aurora . . ." Cody pondered the though of his best friend being the daughter of the light goddess before continuing. "Makes since. You shine as bright as the early morning sunset." Flipping the imaginary collar of his purple camp shirt up, Cody chuckled. "I'm some pretty hot stuff myself, though. I mean, yeah. I've got guns." Cody was comfortable with joking around about himself, but getting a compliment from Ellison made his face flush. His cheeks suddenly turned a bright shade a red. The son of Vulcan rubbed the back of his neck nervously before thanking the daughter of Aurora quietly.
Then she kissed him. That hadn't hugged in years until that day. They'd NEVER kissed. But Ellison kissed him. His heart fluttered inside his chest, then began pounding with a strange urgency. Grabbing onto her arm gently, he tried to make the kiss last. He wanted it to linger, but he didn't want to force a powerful kiss onto her. He pulled away and he reopened his eyes, smirking to himself. Then she seemed to be apologizing. The look on her face showed regret. Moving his hand to her shoulder, Cody exhaled slowly, trying to recollect his thoughts.
"My gods, Ellison . . ." Cody whispered, managing not to curse, and to replace God with gods, like he had been told. Something strange urge in his heart pushed his forward. Their lips met again, and Cody slammed his eyes shut, trying to remember his name as he let his arms rest on his best friend's back. He didn't kiss her for long, just long enough to get a mental memory of the event. He never wanted to forget it. The second kiss, the one he was well aware of, was the moment he realized he might actually love his best friend.
He was scared, though, and his face showed that. Despite his attempt to mask his confusion and worry by biting carefully on his lower lip, Ellison had to know Cody better. She had to see through his disguise. Romans were supposed to remain strong, but Lupa hadn't given her young pupil form of Cody any instruction of girls. Love was probably a waste in the wise wolf's eyes. She had her very extended family, sure, but the Roman empire wasn't built on passion. Mostly, it was built on weapons. And twins. It was built on twins, too. _________________ l Ryann Bailey Thompson l l Cody Michael Washington l Daughter l of l Mercury Son l of l Vulcan l First Cohort l l Fourth Cohort l 14 17 |

Her arms slowly found their way around his neck and she smiled into the kiss. When he pulled back she shook her head. "No.." she murmured. She gently pulled his mouth back to hers. Three kisses from the boy she's been in love with since seventh grade. This was a good day for her. She pulled back after a moment, only now noticing his worry. She frowned, letting her arms fall back to her sides. She reached up, gently cupping his face in her hand. She stroked his cheek with her thumb and titled her head to the side. "What's the matter?" she asked. Her voice cracked, worrying that it was something she had done. Had she gone too far? But if she had, why would he kiss her. It just didn't make sense. Nothing romantic ever made sense to her. She was always taught to kill or be killed. To use weapons not words. But she didn't agree with that... Things could be worked out without violence. But people here always just thought she was strange. She smiled, feeling her heart flutter as she realized that Cody never thought she was strange. She was reminded of her love for him. Though whether or not that was a good thing, she was unsure. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • We take a walk, the sun is shining down Burns my feet, as they touch the ground Good day sunshine Good day sunshine Good day sunshine |

| Cody Washington: Fiddling with his hands awkwardly, Cody started mumbling something to himself. It was practically just sound, though if you listened hard enough, you might be able to make out a jumble of words flying off of his lips. Ellison knew him too well to see past his shabby attempt of hiding his emotion. He really should have known better . . . Ellison knew practically everything about him. If anyone could tell something was bothering him, it was her.
Opening his mouth as if he was about to speak, Cody closed it just as quickly. He couldn't make the words come out. They seemed to catch in his throat. When he opened his mouth again, he started to stammer and murmur well several times under his breath. Ellison's hand felt nice on his face, and it proved to be somewhat of a distraction. Lifting his hand and placing it on top of Ellison's, Cody held her slender hand in place on his cheek. Using the comfort to keep him stable, Cody finally mustered up enough courage to speak.
"It's not that something is . . . the matter. I was just . . . you know . . . thinking." Though he hoped this would fool his friend--or whatever Ellison was to him now--Cody was pretty sure it wouldn't suffice as a reasonable explanation. "You can do so much better, Ellis. I can't offer you everything you've always wanted. I feel like loving you is taking away from a happy life you could have with someone else. I don't get girls. I don't know what to do in a relationship. Other guys . . . They have more to offer . . . then me." Cody stopped talking, looking down onto's Ellison's perfectly flawless face. "I'm worried that I'm not worthy of you, because I don't know the first thing about . . . girls." At his final girls Cody blushed again and cracked a faint smile. _________________ l Ryann Bailey Thompson l l Cody Michael Washington l Daughter l of l Mercury Son l of l Vulcan l First Cohort l l Fourth Cohort l 14 17 |

Attempting to swallow her fear, she continued, deciding to was time to confess something. "Cody, you were my friend when no one else was. You were there for me when I got called weird and made fun of by all of the kids in our school. I started to get a little, well, actually a big, crush on you. Since seventh grade. And then you moved away and I realized that it was more than just a crush. I looked through countless phonebooks for your family, I searched on the internet, I did everything but I just couldn't find you. And I missed you and I realized how much I really cared about you and how hard it was without you..." Ellison looked up at her friend with a determined look on her face. "I'm not going to let that happen again. I'm not going to lose you. The kissing is optional. We don't have to go down that path. Believe me, I want you. I've wanted to since the seventh grade, but if you don't want to then we won't. But either way, I could never do better than you. And I'm not going to lose you again," She finished her speech with a small nod. She pulled her hand away from Cody's cheek with a sad sigh. She pursed her lips and waited for a response. She found herself feeling anxious. Her heart beat was increasing with each second that passed. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • We take a walk, the sun is shining down Burns my feet, as they touch the ground Good day sunshine Good day sunshine Good day sunshine |

| Cody Washington: Cody laughed, mostly to himself. "Thanks, I guess we'll just agree to disagree, then," Cody said with a smirk and he ruffled Ellison's hair. She was so pretty. Cody almost couldn't stop himself from picking her up into a tight hug, but he managed. She wanted to swing.
"We didn't register in any phonebooks, just in case monsters could track us. We didn't even have phones to register," Cody explained with a nonchalant shrug. "But if I had known you were trying to contact me . . . I would have bought a phone. You know we aren't rich, but I would've payed for it if I could have talked to you." Cody's eyes were fighting back tears, and he had to bite his bottom lip to keep from whelping.
"Ellison, all I'm trying to say is, I just love you." Cody stared at his feet sadly, not willing to look into his friend's eyes. _________________ l Ryann Bailey Thompson l l Cody Michael Washington l Daughter l of l Mercury Son l of l Vulcan l First Cohort l l Fourth Cohort l 14 17 |
